Facebook has brought GIF maker Giphy and plans to make it part of Instagram

Facebook's portfolio of companies and applications has got larger once again as this time, they've brought for a reported £330 million. Facebook have also confirmed this on its own blog.

Giphy is one of the largest spaces for creating and sharing Graphical Interchange Formats, also known as GIFs. A GIF is a short video with no sound or an animated image that plays on a loop without the need for the user to start it.

There is another GIF sharing site though, called Imgur, which does compete with Giphy. Although looking around on the internet on various sites, it seems that Giphy always takes centre stage against Imgur.

Facebook plans to integrate Giphy into the Instagram family and you'll be able to add GIFs into Instagram Stories and Instagram's direct messages. It isn't just Instagram that users Giphy's services, you can use it in WhatsApp chats, in the Facebook app and in Facebook Messenger.

And even though Giphy is now owned by Facebook, VP of Product at Facebook Vishal Shah says that other services and social networks that use Giphy's APIs, such as Twitter and Slack, will be able to still use Giphy as they currently do:

"People will still be able to upload GIFs; developers and API partners will continue to have the same access to GIPHY’s APIs; and GIPHY’s creative community will still be able to create great content."
